Dating after 50 when you are widowed: a practical first week
A first week in seven steps, with a real profile example, message examples, and a first-meeting checklist.
On this page 9 sections
Day one: decide what you actually want
Start by naming the thing you want, because the research says widowed people split hard on this. The San Diego Widowhood Project (Schneider and colleagues, 1996, Annals of Clinical Psychiatry) followed 249 widows and 101 widowers and found that by 25 months after a spouse's death, 61% of widowers and 19% of widows were remarried or in a new romantic relationship.
Turn the widows' number over. At two years, four in five were not. If you are somewhere in that four fifths and have started wondering, you are not late, and you are not ahead of yourself either.
What you want on day one is usually smaller than "a relationship" and more specific. Somebody to eat dinner with on a Thursday. Somebody to go to the theatre with, because your friends do not like the theatre. Company at the weekend, when the house is loudest. Or, yes, a partner again, with all of it. Any of those is a legitimate answer, and they lead to different weeks.
Write your answer on paper and keep it where you will see it on Friday. When the week gets confusing, and it will around day four, the paper is what you check the week against.
Day two: tell one person, and make it a friend
Tell one friend before you tell any family, because friends are the part of this that somebody has actually measured. In Carr's 2004 study of 210 widowed adults in the Journal of Marriage and Family, men with low or average support from friends were more likely than women to report interest in remarrying six months after their spouse's death. That particular finding is about widowers. What it shows everybody else is which relationship the researchers found doing the work, and it was friends.
Family is a different calculation. Carr and Boerner's 2013 study in the Journal of Aging Studies, using the Changing Lives of Older Couples data, found that widowers who wanted to date six months after loss often had more conflict with their adult children, while widows who wanted to date reported better relationships with theirs. The same study found dating took a harsher toll on parent-daughter than parent-son relationships.
So your daughter is not the person to practice this on. A friend your own age, who knew your husband, is. Ask her to hold two jobs for the week: to be told where you are going on the day you meet somebody, and to be the one you ring afterwards whatever happens.
If the sentence is hard to say out loud, use the plain version: "I'm thinking about meeting somebody. Not about replacing him. I wanted you to know before anyone else did."
Day three: write one honest paragraph about now
Write about your life as it runs today, not about the marriage. Davidson's 2001 UK study of 25 widows and 26 widowers in Ageing & Society found that widows often described their present existence using the words "selfish" and "freedom," and tied both to no longer having to look after someone all the time. Widowers in that study described choices shaped more by older age and poor health.
That is the raw material. What your Tuesday looks like now. What you have started doing because nobody else gets a vote.
Here is a full example, written for this page rather than taken from anybody's profile:
I retired from teaching three years ago and I have kept the early mornings. Most days start with a walk before the town wakes up, and I am now the person who knows which cafe opens first.
I cook far more than one person needs, so friends get fed. I go to whatever is on at the little theatre, usually alone, occasionally with whoever I can talk into it. I would like that second seat filled more often.
I was widowed and I am not in a hurry. I would rather exchange a few messages, meet for coffee, and see whether there is anything to say to each other.
Three paragraphs: your week, the thing you want company for, the pace. The widowhood gets one line, near the end, and no more than that. Details of his illness, the date, the funeral: those are yours, and they are for a person sitting across a table from you, not for anyone who opens the page.
Photographs from the last year or two only. A picture of you at forty is a small lie that gets found out the moment you walk in.
Now say the hard part out loud, once, because you will need it in person. One widowed person, after a lot of first dates, sanded theirs down to this:
i usually say "so 2 years ago my partner passed away suddenly in a car accident" followed by "I took a lot of time to process it, grieve and heal but here we are". short, sweet and to the point.
r/widowers, January 2026
Two sentences and then the conversation moves. Practice yours in the car this week, in your own words, until you can say it without your voice going.
Day four: send two messages that give somebody somewhere to go
Write to two people, not twenty, and write something they can actually answer. AARP's survey of adults aged 50 and older reported that people who relied only on free platforms were "about 10 percent more likely" to report encountering fake profiles or receiving unsolicited sexually explicit messages (page updated 24 August 2026, checked 19 September 2026). Some of what arrives in your inbox this week will be junk, whatever you do. The messages you send are the half you control.
A compliment is a dead end; the other person can only say thank you. A question about something they put in their own profile is a door.
You mentioned you have been growing tomatoes on a balcony. How is that going this year? I have a garden and still cannot keep basil alive.
I saw you go to the Sunday concerts at the library. I have been meaning to for two years and never have. Are they any good, or is it mostly the free coffee?
Both prove you read the profile and ask something that has an answer in it. Each also gives away one small thing about you, so the reply has somewhere to land. Neither mentions being widowed, because that is not the opening.
Send two. Then close the laptop and leave it until tomorrow; nothing good comes from watching for a reply.
Day five: set up a meeting you can walk out of
Arrange the first meeting so that leaving costs you nothing, because the base rate says you will meet at least one person you would rather not have met. AARP asked 300 adults aged 50 and older who use a dating platform or used one in the last three years (page updated 24 August 2026, checked 19 September 2026), and reported: "In our survey, 41 percent of users said they encountered a fake profile or a person trying to scam them."
The five arrangements, every time, including the seventh time:
- A public place you already know, so you know where the door is and who the staff are.
- Daylight. Coffee at eleven beats dinner at eight for a first meeting.
- Your own transport, both ways. Not his car, not a lift from the station.
- One person who knows where you are, who you are meeting, and when you will be back. This is the friend from day two.
- A sentence for leaving, decided before you arrive: "I'm glad we did this. I've got to get off now."
Keep it to an hour. An hour is long enough to know whether you want a second one, and short enough that a bad first meeting costs you a morning rather than an evening.
Here is somebody with the arrangements already made:
I have a date Saturday evening. My first date in over 50 years. Lovely, accomplished woman about my age. Nice comfortable text conversations so far. She lives an hour away. I'm meeting her at a restaurant in her town.
r/DatingOverSixty, April 2026
Over fifty years since the last one, and the plan is a restaurant in her town, an hour away. That is the whole of this section in one paragraph.
Day six: watch for pressure, not for perfection
Anyone who pushes you to move faster than you want, in any direction, is telling you something about himself. The money side of that has a number attached: the Federal Trade Commission's report Protecting Older Consumers, 2024 to 2025, published 1 December 2025, states that "Reported losses from people 60 and older totaled nearly $2.4 billion, up from about $1.9 billion in 2023."
Pressure at this stage looks ordinary. He wants to move off the dating service onto another app, and he needs to hear in week one that you will not see anybody else. Then come the questions about the house, the pension, what your husband left. There is a reason he cannot be in the room, and an emergency turns up shortly after the affection does.
Something else gets called pressure and is not: nerves, a man who talks too much for the first twenty minutes, a message that reads badly and was meant kindly. People our age are rusty. Rusty is not a warning sign.
The test is what happens when you say no to something small. Say you would rather stay on the site for now, or that Thursday does not work. A man who takes that easily is fine. A man who argues, sulks or asks again the next day has shown you how the rest would go, in week one, for free.
If you think you are being worked rather than courted, our romance scam guide has the order to report in, and a sentence to send.
Day seven: review the week honestly
Look back at the week without asking it to have fixed anything. In the same 2004 study of 210 widowed adults, wanting and having a romantic relationship was linked to fewer depressive symptoms at 18 months, and Carr attributed that to the greater socioeconomic resources of the people in those relationships rather than to the relationship itself.
So the week gets judged on what it was, not on how much lighter you feel. Three questions, and take the paper from day one out while you answer them.
Did anything you wrote down on Monday change? That is not failure. "I thought I wanted a partner and actually I want company on Saturdays" is the most useful result this week can produce.
How did the hour go, if there was one? Not whether he was the one. Whether you were glad you went, and whether you would do another.
And what did it cost you? If you spent the week refreshing a screen and sleeping badly, that matters more than whether anybody wrote back. It is a reason to do less next week, not a reason to stop.
Somebody describing a first date that worked:
So perhaps this won't make the hall of fame for exciting first dates, but for us, it was perfect.
r/DatingOverSixty, July 2026
Nothing in that sentence is dramatic, and it is what a good one is actually like.
Now book next week's version: one message, or one coffee, or nothing at all with a date in the diary to think about it again. Then ring the friend from day two and tell her how it went.
Where to look, if you decide to
People over 50 meet in the same few places: somebody's introduction, a room you already turn up to every week, and dating sites. We name one site here, and only one, because it is the one we can read from the inside, most recently on 16 September 2026. Elena, who writes this site, works at SeniorMatch. This site is hers, not the company's, and we earn a commission when you register through the link below; it does not change your price.
Here is what that account showed. Registering is free. Free members can search by country and state and can reply to anything somebody sends them, but cannot start a conversation, so a free account is a way to be found and to look. The Widowed filter, which narrows the search to other widowed members, sits on the Premium tier at $33.99 a month. Run the free search for your own state first and see who is actually there.
Skip it if you have not finished day one, because paying for a month while you are still deciding what you want just starts a clock. Skip it if what you want is a room of people who knew what this year was like, which no dating site is.

Questions people ask
how soon can you start dating after your spouse dies
There is no correct month, and the spread is wider than most families assume. Read it in both directions. At the two year mark, four widows in five are not in a new relationship, and three widowers in five are. Starting early and not starting at all are both ordinary.
what should a widow put in a dating profile
Your life as it runs now, in three short paragraphs: what your week looks like, one thing you would like company for, and the pace you want. One line about being widowed is enough, and it belongs near the end rather than at the top. Skip the rest of the story; it is yours to tell in person, to somebody who has earned it. Davidson's 2001 UK study of 25 widows and 26 widowers in Ageing & Society found widows often described their life afterwards using the words "selfish" and "freedom." A profile written from that, rather than from the loss, reads like a person.
how do i tell a date that my husband died
In one or two sentences, early, in your own words, and then change the subject. One widowed person on r/widowers in January 2026 described saying that their partner had died suddenly in a car accident two years before, then adding that they had taken a lot of time to process it, and calling it short, sweet and to the point. Practice your version out loud once before you need it. The aim is not to hide anything. It is to keep the first hour from becoming an interview about the worst year of your life.
is it safe to meet someone from a dating site at 60
It is, with the same five arrangements every time. Public place, daylight, your own transport, one person who knows where you are and when you will be back, and a sentence ready for leaving early. AARP surveyed 300 adults aged 50 and older who use a dating platform or used one in the last three years, and reported: "In our survey, 41 percent of users said they encountered a fake profile or a person trying to scam them." Two in five. The checklist is not suspicion, it is what you do because two in five is the real number.
does dating again help with grief
Less directly than people promise. In Carr's 2004 study of 210 widowed adults in the Journal of Marriage and Family, wanting and having a romantic relationship was linked to fewer depressive symptoms at 18 months, but the effect was attributed to greater socioeconomic resources rather than to the relationship itself. So a new person is not the treatment. What a first week can give you is smaller and real: an evening with something in it, and information about what you want next. Judge the week on that, not on how you feel about him.
what if my adult children are against me dating
Expect the reaction to have a history. Carr and Boerner's 2013 study in the Journal of Aging Studies, using the Changing Lives of Older Couples data, found that widowers who wanted to date six months after loss often had more conflict with their adult children, while widows who wanted to date reported better relationships with theirs. The study also found dating took a harsher toll on parent-daughter than parent-son relationships. Tell one friend first and the children when there is something to tell. A first coffee is not news; a person you intend to keep seeing is.
